A Unique Driving Experience: The BMW 3 Series Review
In recent times, I had the opportunity to test drive one of the most peculiar BMWs I’ve encountered. The experience was a mix of highs and lows, especially depending on the speed at which you were driving. At low speeds, this car can be quite frustrating, while at higher speeds, it surprisingly shines.
Initial Impressions and Acceleration
Starting with a zero-to-sixty test, the car feels notably heavy and cumbersome at low speeds. It’s as if you’re manoeuvring a massive block of metal; every bump on the road feels amplified, almost like the tyres are solid. The steering is notably heavy, and it creates an unsettling driving experience. Given my long-standing appreciation for BMWs, this was unexpected.
However, once you get past the sluggishness and reach motorway speeds, the car transforms. Acceleration becomes reasonable, especially for a vehicle with a smaller engine. The steering becomes more responsive, and the connection with the road improves significantly. At around 70 mph, the car feels effortless, gliding smoothly along the highway.
The Diesel Dilemma
A major factor contributing to the car's low-speed struggle seems to be its diesel engine. The 3-litre version of this model, particularly the 335 diesel, offers a far better driving experience. In contrast, the balance in this vehicle feels off until you hit around 50-60 mph. The difference is striking: while the diesel variant feels harmonious and well-tuned, this one lacks that essential synergy.
Interior and Comfort
Moving to the interior, I found some aspects less than appealing. The pseudo-wood accents come off as cheap and tasteless. Additionally, the instrument cluster is partially obstructed by the steering wheel, making it less user-friendly. While the centre console is straightforward, I was left puzzled by some of the buttons, unsure of their functions.
The rearview mirrors are surprisingly small, which could hinder visibility, especially with three passengers in the back. Despite being a compact vehicle, it corners well, though the heaviness can be disconcerting at times. I often felt disconnected from the road, which detracted from the overall driving experience.
Conclusion: A Mixed Bag
In summary, this BMW offers a curious driving experience. At low speeds, it feels like you're driving a heavy, unresponsive vehicle, while at higher speeds, it transforms into something much more enjoyable. If you're considering this model, I strongly recommend taking it for a test drive. You’ll quickly understand the peculiarities of this car.
For urban driving, this model could become quite tiresome, making me feel like I was steering a ship rather than a car. It’s a unique blend of characteristics that I haven’t quite encountered in other BMWs, making it a peculiar option in the 3 Series lineup.
