The 2024 BMW 1 Series

Post by BMW »

The New BMW 1 Series: A Comprehensive Review

The latest BMW 1 Series brings a host of upgrades, blending sporty aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. Starting at £31,000 and climbing to £42,000 for higher trims, this premium hatchback offers features typically found in more luxurious cars. But is it worth the price? Let’s explore the details.

Luxurious Interior with a Modern Twist

Inside the new BMW 1 Series, you’ll immediately notice its upmarket vibe, rivalling larger, more expensive models. The dashboard features soft-touch materials and a sleek design. Every model comes equipped with a widescreen touchscreen for infotainment and a digital driver display, offering crisp visuals and responsive controls. However, the touchscreen can be a bit tricky to navigate, and BMW has removed the intuitive swivel wheel found in older models.

The optional heads-up display adds a modern touch, but some aspects of the interior fall short of expectations. Trim materials on the doors and sun visors feel cheaper than in previous BMWs, and the indicator stalks lack the premium feel one would expect at this price point.

Pricing and Features

The entry-level Sport trim starts at £31,000, but the M Sport version at £33,000 is the sweet spot. It adds a sportier design, M Sport seats, and suspension upgrades that enhance the driving experience. The M Sport pack also introduces stylish touches like red brake callipers, shadowline trim, and an M steering wheel. However, customising your BMW 1 Series with additional packages, such as the Tech Pack Pro, can quickly inflate the price.

Engine Options and Driving Dynamics

The new 1 Series lineup now excludes diesel engines, focusing on petrol options instead. The base model features a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 170 horsepower, supported by a mild hybrid system for improved efficiency. For those seeking more power, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine or the M135i with 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive will deliver a thrilling performance. Unfortunately, manual transmission is no longer available, with all versions now equipped with automatic gearboxes.

While the 1.5-litre engine delivers decent acceleration, the official 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds felt closer to 8 seconds during real-world testing. Nevertheless, the car’s agile steering and sporty suspension make it a joy to drive on twisty roads.

Striking Exterior Design

The BMW 1 Series boasts an aggressive design, especially in M Sport trims. From bold front-end styling to 17- to 19-inch wheel options, it exudes a sporty character. The rear design includes a hidden exhaust and a faux diffuser, which some might find underwhelming. Unique paint options, such as purple, add a touch of personality, especially for those leasing the car.

Comfort and Practicality

The cabin offers reasonable space for a hatchback, but taller passengers might find rear headroom tight due to the sloping roofline. Storage options are plentiful, with large door bins, cup holders, and USB ports in both the front and rear. However, the boot capacity varies: 300 litres for the 1.5-liter version and 380 litres for the 2.0-liter models.

Technology and Annoyances

The 1 Series packs innovative features like the Reversing Assistant, which retraces your parking path automatically. Other highlights include a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, and customizable ambient lighting. However, the reliance on touch controls for climate settings can be inconvenient, and the driving mode selection process is less intuitive than before.

Verdict

The new BMW 1 Series is a stylish, tech-savvy, and sporty hatchback that offers a premium driving experience. While it’s undeniably expensive for its class, it’s worth shortlisting if you’re seeking a compact car with a luxurious feel. With thoughtful customization, the 1 Series can cater to various needs, whether for sporty driving or comfortable commuting.
