Test Drive Review: 1997 BMW E39 535i V8

Today, we're taking a test drive in the 1997 BMW E39 535i V8 model. Unlike later models, this one has the ABS module located behind the glovebox, which avoids some of the problems found in subsequent releases. Personally, this car ranks as one of my all-time favourites, especially considering the extensive upgrades it’s received over time.

Originally a standard 535 model, this car has been enhanced with M5 spoilers, authentic M5 alloy wheels, coil-over shocks, and AC Schnitzer modifications throughout. Although no major changes have been made to the engine, the presence of the powerful M62 V8 makes for an exhilarating drive.

Interior and Visibility

The E39’s interior visibility is almost flawless. While the headrests slightly block the rearview, the overall visibility is excellent. BMW nailed the design of the side mirrors for this model, making them long and narrow to optimise the view behind. This design decision is often missed in modern cars, where large mirrors are more common but lack the streamlined simplicity of the E39's.

The car also comes with a range of electric features: electric seats, windows, fold-in mirrors, and more. The interior is classic BMW, with leather seats that are both spacious and stylish. In terms of comfort and aesthetic appeal, this is one of the last truly handsome 5 Series designs.

Driving Experience and Performance

This automatic model is equipped with an adaptive gearbox that learns and responds to your driving style. It includes a manual selection option, which I find essential for drivers looking for a more enthusiastic experience. Being a V8, it can feel slightly slow in the lower revs, but once you hit the mid-range, the power truly shines.

A quick 0-60 mph test shows that while it’s not the fastest car in this range, it truly comes alive on the motorway. As soon as you reach around 60 mph and apply full throttle, the mid-range torque kicks in, delivering an impressive surge of power. This car is built for open roads and highways, where its performance and power can be fully appreciated.

With the M5 alloys and coilover suspension, the handling is firm and sturdy without sacrificing comfort. It holds the road beautifully around corners, maintaining a refined but robust ride quality. A custom quad-exhaust system—similar to the M5’s—enhances the driving experience with a rich, throaty sound that adds to the car’s character.

Features and Modifications

The E39 has some unique touches that were cutting-edge at the time. Features like the self-adjusting rearview mirror are useful, though the M5 model had some issues with it. The car is also equipped with traction control (ASC), which can be switched off via a dashboard control. Interestingly, if the MAF sensor fails, the ASC light will stay on, impacting traction control. It’s worth noting in case you encounter issues with that sensor.

A noteworthy tip for E39 owners: using premium fuel significantly boosts performance and efficiency, despite the car’s reputation for being a bit fuel-hungry.

Braking and Handling

The braking system on this E39 is exceptional, as expected from BMW. This model features the larger front discs from the 540, which provide a balanced and controlled braking experience. Testing the brakes at 50 mph reveals smooth, synchronised responses with ABS activation as needed, keeping the car stable and steady.

Final Thoughts

Driving the 1997 E39 535i V8 is a reminder of BMW’s legacy in producing driver-focused cars with top-notch engineering. At over 15 years old, this car feels as robust and refined as it did on the showroom floor. With its refined performance, firm yet comfortable ride, and solid build, the E39 remains a true classic that can still hold its own on modern roads.

For anyone seeking a blend of style, comfort, and powerful performance, the BMW E39 535i V8 delivers an authentic driving experience that's hard to match.
